A little after noon, all seven of us stood on the summit. My GPS called it 23,535 feet above sea level. It was a crystal clear day, and we could easily pick out 5 of the 6 highest mountains in the world all around us. My only complaint was that the wind was relentless, and although the ambient temperature was perhaps warmer than what might be expected in late November, it was just too cold to hang out on the summit.

Architecture team arrived Kathmandu and working with Almunium, glass and Tress group
We are joined by Jiban, our coordinator in Kathmandu, who has been setting up meetings with manufacturers and suppliers of materials. We work on setting up our game plan for the next few before we retreat to our rooms to unload our gear. This, too, is short lived as after only about a half hour we return to the lobby to have coffee and meet with two of our material suppliers and fabricators. Tec is our man in charge of fabricating the trusses. We hope to get one full-size truss made while we are in Nepal. Mingma is our contact for aluminum storefronts. Both have had experience with transporting and installing materials in the Khumbu. Much of our discussion is about the minute specifics of materials and member sizing, as well as the capacity and history of transporting materials to the (remote) Khumbu.

During his talk for the Mountaineers, an event that is open to the public, Athans will show slides and video of his extensive alpine climbing career as well as clips from his latest documentary project in the caves of Mustang, “Secrets of Shangri-la,” set to air on November 18 on PBS.

The Wild West of the East: A Ski Expedition to Nepal
It is high noon on Monday, Nepal time, when the phone rings. Jiban Ghimire, our expedition agent, [www.shangrilatrek.com] has the news we'd been waiting for since we landed in Kathmandu five days earlier. "Your ski bags have arrived."
After five days of wondering whether we'd be able to proceed as planned with the expedition, our skis’ arrival delivered a jolt of energy we'd been sorely lacking. We ached to get to the airport and pick them up. Alas, Nepalis run a hard line when you're trying to excuse yourself from their party. We politely explain no fewer than three times that we have to be leaving before they actually allow us to leave. Finally, they adorn us each with a silk scarf and bid us farewell.

First Ascent and Melissa Arnot Top Ama Dablam at 22,348 Feet
Melissa n Kristine in Khumbu - Summit of AmaDablam on 26/10/09
Around 9 a.m.,in the wind and freezing cold, Cory, Chhewang and I stood on top of Ama Dablam at 22,348 feet. The sun was just cresting the summit and the wind made it feel frigid and inhospitable. Around us, we could see amazing views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse and many other beautiful Himalayan peaks.Hi Jiban, Home safe and sound, fighting jet-lag. I spoke with Neil, the CEO for Eddie Bauer, I am not sure what the best way to do but you seem like a good start! Again, Jiban, thank you so much for all of the fantastic logistics. You make my trips so seamless and easy, and treat me like family. Greatly appreciated.
